In the spirit of building community and moving together, we’ll be celebrating our 50 year anniversary this Fall, and we invite you to our big party, the Joyful Resistance Jubilee, happening October 13th! We intend to celebrate our work and reflect on our history, where we are now, and where we’re heading together– with music, food, dancing, and simply enjoying each other’s company. We hope you’ll join us!

In 1973, a group of local residents and activists with roots in the civil rights, feminist and anti-Vietnam War movements founded the Jamaica Plain Tenants Action Group, now City Life / Vida Urbana.

For 50 years, City Life has been a leading force for change in the Boston area, responding to the ever-changing forces that effect poor and working people.

She hails from Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood and gained notoriety when she played the lead role in the New England premiere of Speakeasy Stage Company’s musical production of The Color Purple.

  • Twice Thou (M. Antonio Ennis) will spit fire and bring rap to another level at the House of Blues Stage at the Joyful Resistance Jubilee stage. Twice Thou is dropping TWO new rent control raps with Lovely Hoffman @lovelyhoffman, Madame Cruz @cruzita_madamecruz. Do not miss this, get your tickets NOW! Twice began as a successful hip-hop artist with the internationally known and notorious rap group The Almighty RSO, who later changed their name to The Undisputed MadeMen. He's been signed to (7) major record deals with labels -Tommy Boy, Epic, Virgin, Def Jam, Restless/BMG, RCA, and Interscope. Antonio has a CORI-friendly clothing business (Antonio Ansaldi Clothing Company-circa 1996) employs local at-risk youth and organizes social causes. Between 2008-2010, as did millions of homeowners in America, he'd find out he was a victim of Bank of America's predatory loan practices that targeted communities of color with foreclosures. In April 2011, he went to the non-profit organization City Life/Vida Urbana as a homeowner in foreclosure seeking help. He made his story public while being involved with the movement for only 5 months. He became the poster child for the national Right to the City (www.RightToTheCity.org) sponsored campaign boycotting Bank of America. He helped organize 3,500 social activists and homeowners on September 30, 2011 in what would turn out to be the biggest protest in history against Bank of America at their headquarters in Boston, MA. Empowered and refreshed by the movement, he started to write songs about the big banking crisis and recorded a full-length album titled “The Bank Attack”. His leadership qualities, commitment to the movement, and the numerous rallies he MC'd as a volunteer prompted CLVU to offer him employment in Nov 2011 as the Canvassing Coordinator and Community Organizer. As an organizer with CLVU, he brings an amplified hip-hop voice to the movement with a special interest in motivate and edify the youth.   • Boston artists represent at the Joyful Resistance Jubilee🎙. Madame Cruz will perform the hot NEW SINGLE called Rent Control with our brother: Twice Thou on the House of Blues stage🎶! The new Rent Control rap song has Latin dance party vibes and Spanglish: English and Spanish. Madame Cruz started writing music as a child in elementary, began writing hooks and verses for other artists, and loved every Latin drum incorporated. Madame Cruz' trips to Puerto Rico and bomba, plena, and salsa caribeña blasting by her grandmother's house inspired her artistry🪘🥁. Madame Cruz collaborated on writing hooks and verses for Boston's own Lou Armstrong, Cassius the 5th, The Knowbodies, featured on several tracks with Jtronius, and partnered with Etel on his Million Dollar Notebook.   • You won’t want to miss Taína Asili take the stage at the Joyful Resistance Jubilee this Friday at House of Blues! Taína is a Puerto Rican singer, filmmaker, and activist who combines powerful vocals with a multi-genre fusion – confidently weaving between salsa, rock, reggae, cumbia, reggaeton, and hip hop – with multilingual songs that beat with the heart of social change. Inspired by her ancestors and current social and climate justice movements, her songs and art provide music to the resistance. She’s been featured in several news outlets and her bilingual Anti-Trump Anthem ‘No Es Mi Presidente’.
